Meet Doane Stuart's Headmaster
Dr. Richard D. Enemark has been a teacher and administrator at independent schools and colleges for over 30 years. He holds his A.B. from Colgate, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; an M.A. from the University of Vermont; a Master of Philosophy and a Master of Arts from Columbia University; and his Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature, with highest distinction, from Columbia.He has served independent schools in various roles, including College Counselor, Dean, and Headmaster, at schools as diverse as Burke Mountain Academy (a school for internationally ranked ski racers, where he started his teaching career), and Phillips Academy, Andover. Dr. Enemark is currently the longest serving head of school in our Region.
Dr. Enemark was a member of the National Commission of Independent Schools of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, and has served on many boards, including the Board of Burke Mountain Academy,where he was co-chair of the Governance Committee, and the Foundation Board of the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce, where he served as its President.
The 2011-2012 academic year marks Dr. Enemark's fourteenth year at Doane Stuart. Dr. Enemark serves on the faculty in the Upper School's English Department, teaching seminar classes in African-American Literature, Austen, Dickens, and Tolstoy. He is the father of Forrest ('12) and Faith ('03), a graduate of the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Dr. Enemark's wife, the late Nancy Lawton, was a nationally recognized artist whose works are in the permanent collections of the Albany Institute of History and Art; the Brooklyn Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Arkansas Art Center; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
