Rhynhart '12 - 2012 National Achievement Scholarship Program Finalist!

Doane Stuart senior Noah Rhynhart of Albany has been selected as a finalist in the 48th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. More than 160,000 high school juniors from all parts of the United States requested consideration in the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship Program when they took the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

Noah has advanced to Finalist standing in the National Achievement Scholarship Program by demonstrating through outstanding performance potential for future academic success among the 1,600 exceptional, scholastically talented young men and women among Black-American high school seniors who were selected as semifinalists in the fall. Now, as a Finalist, Noah will continue in the competition for one of approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship® awards worth more than $2.4 million.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program, conducted by NMSC, is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants. To date, over 31,100 young men and women have received Achievement Scholarship awards worth more than $98 million.

Congratulations, Noah!

8th Annual College Sweatshirt Day at Doane Stuart

On January 27, the Doane Stuart Community celebrated the School’s 8th annual College Sweatshirt Day! (Pictured right: Over 300 Students, Faculty and Staff gathered in the Interfaith Chapel, each donning a college sweatshirts of her or his choice, to recognize the implications and significance, not only of choosing to attend college, but of choosing the “right” college.)

In many ways, the college counseling process at Doane Stuart is an extension of a student’s overall experience. Students are encouraged to embark on a process of self-reflection, to gather information and then make informed decisions through extensive discovery and analysis. Our goal is to give students (and their families) the guidance that they need to help them to make the most informed choices at each step in the process.

The 31 members of the class of 2012 have already gained acceptance to many of the Nation’s most prestigious colleges, receiving more than $1.5 Million in Merit-Based college scholarships, to date, for this coming year!

Court Ruling

January 27, 2012

Dear Members of the Doane Stuart Community:

As you may have read in an article entitled “Religious Order Wins Ruling” in this morning’s Times Union, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court, Third Department, issued a decision yesterday in the ongoing lawsuit that the Female Academy of the Sacred Heart (and its parent corporation, the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States Province), brought against our School. That decision upheld an earlier order by the trial court, which had denied our request to preliminarily dismiss the lawsuit.

Although we were hopeful that the Appellate Division would reverse the trial court and dismiss the case, unfortunately, it did not.

Nonetheless, our core defenses remain intact, and we continue to believe we will prevail and that our cause is just.

The impact of the Appellate Division’s decision is that the lawsuit will continue, and that we will continue to take all actions at our disposal to defend ourselves against the Female Academy’s demand that we continue paying rent on a property from which the Female Academy forced us to relocate, including seeking further review of the Appellate Division’s decision in the New York Court of Appeals.

Due to the ongoing nature of this litigation, the School will not issue any further statements at this time, but do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Richard D. Enemark
Headmaster

Founders Day Chapel 2012

On January 24, 2012, the Doane Stuart Community gathered to celebrate the School’s annual Founders Day Chapel. Chapel began with a reflection, which was written by Lynn Simek, for the first Convocation of Doane Stuart, on September 17, 1975. Ms. Simek was one of the founding faculty members.

And so our endings
Were in truth
A new beginning---
And in the Chapel
Full of hearts and lives and shining faces
We gathered
To begin to build
A future from
The proud treasures of our past.
And we were together
For the first time
Unified in mind and spirit
And strangely, suddenly
Filled with joy
At our grand adventure.
Students, teachers, administrators
All as one
In the great realization
That the stones that the builders set aside
Had indeed become a cornerstone
And all of us were finally HOME.
Amen

Pictured above: Doane Stuart “Lifers” (students who have been at D.S. since Kindergarten, or earlier) Christine Correa ’12, Daniel Hodgkinson ’12, Andrew McSparron ’12 and Forrest Enemark ’12, read reflections from Sister Brown and Father Bill Small, who along with Paul Hughes and Louis Jakovic, bravely founded Doane Stuart.

Dr. Enemark (pictured right, with Nathaniel Clement ’20 who closed the Chapel with a prayer for Doane Stuart) reminded the community that, while we are all very proud of our new campus home, Doane Stuart is more than just the bricks and mortar that surrounds us; it is the people within our own community, the teachers, the parents, and the students or diverse and richly various backgrounds. Change brings hope and opportunity. Our progenitor schools (Kenwood Academy, and Saint Agnes School), each relocated a number of times before even becoming Doane Stuart. We are very happy in our new campus home, and hope to remain here for hundreds of years. But, as Sr. Brown reflected in the Fall of 1976, “We are trying anew each day to build this school, to realize more and more of the dream we have for our students. Please dream with us …”

Tolstoy, War and Peace, and Dinner

For each of the fourteen years Dr. Enemark has been Headmaster at Doane Stuart, he has taught a senior seminar. Dr. Enemark has taught a variety of courses: on the works of Jane Austen, on Japanese novels, on African-American Literature, on Dickens, and on Tolstoy’s War and Peace.

An unexpected tradition that has evolved from the Headmaster’s seminar is an annual dinner organized by the class and hosted by Dr. Enemark at his home.

In early January, students enrolled in this year’s Senior Seminar course, Tolstoy’s War and Peace, gathered at Dr. Enemark’s historic townhouse on Washington Park for the traditional “period dinner” reflective of the time of the great work.

Students selected characters form the book to represent, prepared authentic cuisine, and donned costumes (and personalities) representative of the characters from the classic work of literature.

Pictured, in character, clockwise from left: Tim Haltermann ’12 (Prince Andrew); Forrest Enemark ’12 (Natasha Rostov); Austin Dehnert ’12 (Pierre); Noah Rhynhart ’12 (Prince Vasili); Christine Correa ’12 (Countess Rostova); Michael Iselin ’12 (Nicolas Rostov); Andrew McSparron ’12 (Denisov); Chris Reynolds ’12 (Maria Dmitrievna) and Kush Fansiwala ’12 (Count Rostov).

D.S. Goes SOLAR!

In addition to the new Green Roof (anticipated completion: Fall of 2012), today, January 24, 2012, Doane Stuart executed a contract with Monolith Solar Associates, LLC of East Greenbush, to install over 100 Solar panels on the flat roofs of the 1939 addition.

The 25,920 Watt Net Metered, Grid Tied Solar Electric System is estimated to produce 31,104 KWH of power, annually. By adding the solar panels, the School will see a significant reduction in energy costs, which will be redirected to academic programs and to benefit Faculty across all divisions of the School.

The School will incur no cost for the panels, only savings. NYSERDA covers the cost of the panels and their installation. Installation of the system will begin in April, with a targeted completion date of May 2012.
Dr. Enemark said of the project, “This is yet another step toward overall sustainability, and our dedication to the environment, with the added benefit of boosting funding to our curriculum, and outstanding Teachers, in the process. It is truly a win-win.”

On Monday, January 23, 2012 the Doane Stuart Community welcomed Clayton Besch, III SA ’75 to campus. The Besch family has rich roots at Doane Stuart. Clayton’s mother Louise Willard Besch SA’47, was a very active alumna at Doane Stuart, and his aunt, Elizabeth Willard Hannock SA’ 43, also graduated from Saint Agnes. The visit was Mr. Besch’s first to the School’s new campus in Rensselaer.

College Sweatshirt Day!

Friday, January 27 is not just any Friday at Doane Stuart. It is College Sweatshirt Day! For many students, it is their introduction to college, and their first chance to choose a college - by picking which school to represent with their sweatshirt of choice.(Pictured: The Doane Stuart Community gathered in the School's Interfaith Chapel, in 2011, to celebrate College Sweatshirt Day.)

Over 300 Students, Faculty and Staff will gather, all donning college sweatshirts of their choice, to recognize the implications and significance, not only of choosing to attend college, but of choosing the “right” college. The meeting begins promptly at 9:10 a.m. in the Interfaith Chapel at Doane Stuart.

The recognition continues at 10:00 a.m. when the Third Grade meets with Doane Stuart’s Director of College Counseling (also an excellent photo opportunity) to discuss the college application process, and to learn “who” goes to college, “what” college is, and “why” college is important. The children, from all grades, will participate in fun activities designed to foster conversation between students and their peers, teachers and family members, about college.

In many ways, the college counseling process at Doane Stuart is an extension of a student’s overall experience. Students are encouraged to embark on a process of self-reflection, to gather information and then make informed decisions through extensive discovery and analysis.
