Blohm '13 Honorable Mention in 2012 Congressional Art Competition

On May 15, 2012 Congressman Paul Tonko announced the winners of the 2012 Congressional Art Competition for the 21st Congressional District.

Only five of the 30 entries, from 13 local school districts, were recognized, including the work of Doane Stuart junior Emy Blohm (pictured center, with Congressman Tonko and her mother, Teresa).

In a press release, Congressman Tonko said “Creative expression through the arts is an important part of the learning process and allows students to exercise their imagination.”

The art was displayed during a reception at the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy, and was judged by a panel of local arts professionals who donated their time to the project. The judges were Alana Akacki, Exhibitions Manager and Volunteer Coordinator at the Arts Center of the Capital Region; Marilee Sousie, Master of Fine Arts student at the University at Albany; and Monica Bill-Hughes, Master of Fine Arts student at the University at Albany.

The Congressional Art Competition started in 1982 as an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. This marks the third year Congressman Tonko has hosted a reception for the event. More than 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition.

Congratulations, Emy!

From Ivy League to DS, New Science Instructor Sets Stage for Exciting Things to Come

The Doane Stuart Community is pleased to welcome David G. Wells, Ph.D. to the ranks of the Upper School faculty. Dr. Wells comes to D.S. after more than ten years as an Assistant and Associate Professor at Yale University, and ten years as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Brown University and The University of Michigan.

At Yale, Dr. Wells developed and taught multiple courses for both undergraduate and graduate students in general biology and neurobiology. Most notably, he is responsible for starting the very first introductory biology course for non-majors ever offered at Yale University, “An Issues Approach to Biology,” a course that continues to be very popular today. He also developed and taught a freshman seminar course entitled “How the Brain Works.” During the 2007-08 academic year, Dr. Wells was a visiting scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has taught courses and/or conducted research at The University of Vermont, St. Michael’s College, Brown University, and Yale University.

Dr. Wells earned his BA in Zoology, MS in Biochemistry, and Ph.D. in Anatomy & Neurobiology from the University of Vermont and completed his postdoctoral work in Biology and Neuroscience at the University of Michigan and Brown University, respectively.

He has been recognized by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Health, the American Motility Society, the Ellison Medical Foundation, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the University of Vermont, the University of Michigan, and Yale University. His research has been widely published, and he has successfully earned over $2million in grant funding for his research.

While Dr. Wells has been a successful teacher and researcher at the college level for more than 11 years, his passions and interests pull him toward Upper School teaching. In addition to teaching, Dr. Wells has coached soccer, tennis, golf, hockey and squash. This fall, he will take on the added role of coach of the Boys Soccer team.

We look forward to welcoming Dr. Wells to our community in the fall, and to an exciting school year together!

Business Review features 10 minutes with Dr. Enemark

Our Headmaster was featured in the May 4 issue of The Business Review in “10 minutes with…” by Pam Allen, which features a different executive from the Capital Region each week.

The article highlights Dr. Enemark’s passion for Tolstoy’s War and Peace, which, the article points out, Dr. Enemark has read more than 20 times. Dr. Enemark also teaches an Upper School elective on Tolstoy using the same, note-ridden copy he read as a student at Colgate University.

On his personality, Dr. Enemark comments, “I’m very demanding. And a perfectionist. I’m also very competitive in everything.”

In speaking of the nine month restoration and renovation of our Rensselaer Campus, Dr. Enemark said, “I always wanted to be an architect. I had the opportunity to play one during the remodel. I helped develop the color palette, decide how to renovate the downstairs space into a chapel, with its wonderful wood and breathtaking art deco ceiling. When we bought it, the downstairs was an abandoned gym with seven-foot holes in the ceiling and creaking floors.”

When asked “What are the traits of a Doane Stuart graduate?” Dr. Enemark responded “They learn how to read, write and speak with conviction. Every student learns to speak in front of the entire school.” And that “They have a real sense of presence. They impress people. They aren’t cocky or cynical because they understand how that would set a bad example.”

Upper School to bid Farewell to Faculty

The Upper School will say goodbye this summer to Mr. Drew Levy, Instructor of Upper School History, member of Campus Ministry and boys’ soccer coach for the past 4 years. Mr. Levy has accepted a teaching position at the Emma Willard School, where he will continue his career in teaching. We wish Mr. Levy well, and thank him for providing our students with excellent coaching, teaching and spiritual guidance.

A search for a new Upper School History Instructor is under way; a formal announcement of selection will come in the summer.

The Upper School will also say farewell to Ms. Kate Miller. Ms. Miller joined the DS Community in 2007 as an Upper School Science Instructor, quickly building on the spirit of discovery and the love of science at DS. Ms. Miller will leave the ranks of the Upper School Faculty at the end of this school year to pursue future graduate studies, research, and marriage! Ms. Miller will soon wed Erik Kriss.

Ms. Miller was integral in the planning and clearing of the nature trails that wind through the 27 acres of our Rensselaer campus, trails that students and faculty will enjoy for generations.

We wish Ms. Miller the best in her future studies and research; and offer congratulations on her impending nuptials.

Upper School Prepares to Bid Farewell to Dean of Students

After 4 years as Upper School Dean of Students, Ms. Suzanne Filippone will return to her native New England. Ms. Filippone grew up in New England, graduated from Berwick Academy, the University of New Hampshire (B.A.) and (M.Ed.) and came to us from Berwick Academy in Maine.

Ms. Filippone’s departure comes following her husband Dr. Jeffrey Fortin earning a faculty position at Emmanuel College in Boston. In addition to saying farewell to Ms. Filippone, DS will also be saying goodbye to Luca ’22 and Andre ’25.

We wish Ms. Filippone, Dr. Fortin, Luca and Andre, all the best in this next phase of their lives. You will be missed, but remain in our memories for all you have given your students and friends.

An active nation-wide search for a new Dean of Students has been ongoing; a formal announcement will be made in the coming weeks.

DS gives new home to displaced trees

Director of Maintenance, Shawn Brozowski “Mr. B” acted swiftly when he noticed road crews removing trees in the City of Rensselaer because of construction. Mr. B knew that if the adult trees were to be saved, the clock was ticking.

After a few calls, and some help from Rensselaer Mayor, Dan Dwyer, five flowering pear trees and one weeping birch tree, have a new home… the Doane Stuart Campus.

Thanks to Mayor Dwyer and the City of Rensselaer for their continuing generosity, and to Mr. B (pictured right with one of the flowering pear trees) for his ongoing commitment to the beatification of our campus and protection of the environment.

Mains '10 to Spend Summer Researching Psycholinguistics at Harvard

Paul Mains ’10, who has long been fascinated with the field of linguistics, was selected for a prestigious summer internship at Harvard University.

Paul (pictured right, delivering his 2010 graduation address) will be part of a joint project between Harvard’s Laboratory of Developmental Studies and Tufts University, in conjunction with Massachusetts General Hospital. He will study language comprehension in people with schizophrenia.

At Tufts, Paul will be tasked with recruiting and running subjects. At Harvard, he will perform the data analysis. The project is attempting to isolate those factors that people with schizophrenia utilize when resolving syntactic ambiguity. Isolating those factors could yield insight into more general trends in how schizophrenia affects perception/cognition, which will contribute to a better understanding of the disease as a whole.

Paul is a linguistics major at Carleton College.
