DS receives National Recognition for Mascot Name

Doane Stuart has been recognized, nationally, for its pedagogy, programs and curriculum, and recently for something very different… the School’s Mascot, the Thunder Chicken.

ESPN Magazine’s March 2011 issue, dubbed The Fiction Issue, recognized thirteen of the more unique Mascot names for High Schools around the country, including the The Doane Stuart School Thunder Chickens.

While Doane Stuart is more widely known in the Capital Region for its strong academics and college placement, the recognition for its unusual Mascot is welcomed with open arms.

Headmaster, Dr. Richard Enemark said of the honor, “With such a wide array of ages (students in Nursery through Grade 12) it is important that we have a Mascot for which everyone can cheer. There are few things that can bring your heart as much joy as a group of Lower School students cheering on our sports teams with a strong ‘Go Thunder Chickens…GO!’ ”

Lower School students have even thought up a fictional home for the Thunder Chicken; located just off of the Athletic Fields, the Chicken Coop (a storage shed for athletic equipment), happily houses our mascot.
