Early Childhood Erupts Apple Volcanoes

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a group of Doane Stuart students on Tuesday conducted an experiment that may draw the interest of area volcanologists.

Borrowing some of the apples they picked on last week’s field trip to Bowman Orchards, each student in Ms. Skivington’s Early Childhood STEAM class used a hollowed apple to create a chemical reaction that would result in watching a volcano “erupt.” In addition to learning science, the students performed the experiment to reinforce the sound and use of the letter “e.”

To make the eruption, students measured out a tablespoon of baking soda, placed it in their apple, then slowly poured in a small cup of vinegar, which resulted in an eruption. Curious to see what would happen if they repeated the experiment using water in place of vinegar the students were disappointed not to see bubbles or hear crackling noises. But Ms. Skivington said everyone had fun making predictions and experimenting like a real scientist.
