Isabel Barats ’20 starts newspaper titled 'Spotlight on Religion'
Isabel Barats ’20 has started a newspaper focused on the spiritual life of Doane Stuart, which reflects the interfaith component at the heart of the student experience and school mission. Entitled “Spotlight on Religion,” the paper is advised by Art teacher Jason Martinez and is produced in consultation with members of the Doane Stuart Campus Ministry. In producing the paper, Barats, who is a frequent volunteer at religious observations at the school, said: “I feel that it is important for this generation to grow up with an understanding of other cultures and traditions and I want to write newsletters to help spread the idea of tolerance across the DS community. I strongly believe that we cannot understand another individual if we do not know their culture and their beliefs. Over the past few years, I have been able to learn more about my own belief system through chapel presentations. A newspaper that focuses on multiple world religions (such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity) can not only allow me to learn about religions that I do not know enough about, but can also spread my newly acquired knowledge in a positive way.”
