On March 1, Doane Stuart Lower School celebrated Read Across America.
As stated by the National Education Association, “Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child, in every community to celebrate reading.” In honor of this day Lower School invited Amy Deweerd. a local children’s book author to celebrate with us. Amy Deweerd taught kindergarten in a local school district for 21 years and now creates wonderful children’s books.
Lower School students will begin creating their own books in the next few months. Amy’s visit helped explain how to get started on the writing process. She explained where she got her ideas and how she became an illustrator too. Several of our students told her that they already have some ideas after her visit. Amy asked if she could be invited back to read their books with them. We would be delighted to have her back. Thank you Amy for inspiring our students to read and write!
