Jacob Shipley graduated from Ithaca College in May, and has already secured the lead role in the tour of the Broadway show “Amazing Grace.”
Shipley, who studied musical theater while at Ithaca, plays John Newton, a former slave ship captain who later joined the abolition movement. “Amazing Grace” is the story behind the famous song. The tour will take Shipley to 27 different states.
When asked to reflect on his experience at Doane Stuart, Shipley commented, “My time at Doane Stuart helped me to think critically about the state of art in our country and how we can use it to better society. I’m grateful for my teachers and their constantly challenging perspectives that have pushed me to become not only a better artist, but also a better human.”
Capital Region residents can see Shipley at Proctors Theater on March 17 for one of two shows. Tickets are available at https://www.proctors.org/.
