Doane Stuart

Student Chess Tournament

In February and March, Doane Stuart held a chess tournament open to all middle and upper school students, as well as faculty and staff. Eight competitors entered the Swiss-system tournament, a format that guaranteed every player three games. Chris Bradt, the librarian, who played Brian Ganeles ’19 in the final, organized the tournament. Mr. Bradt (a 2005 Doane Stuart graduate) believes that chess has a bright future at The Doane Stuart School.

“When I was organizing the games and puzzles in the library, I discovered a number of chess boards. I knew that some students played chess and given how popular the annual Febrey Memorial Ping Pong Tournament organized by Mr. Y is, I thought it would be fun to try another schoolwide-tournament to help us through winter’s final months. I chose a Swiss-system format because a round-robin might have taken too long, but I also wanted everyone to be able to play multiple games, regardless of whether they won or lost.”
