Adding dish soap and isopropyl alcohol to cups of gargled salt water. Writing Chemistry-themed poetry. Helping The Scientist experiment with milk and food dyes. Turning each other into musical instruments. It is all in a day’s (week’s) work for the DS students and faculty who participated in National Chemistry Week 2016.
Doane Stuart students celebrated this year by writing poetry and submitting it to the NCW contest, and by hosting science experiments at the New York State Museum as part of the “Solving Mysteries Through Chemistry” fair on Saturday, October 15.
We are proud to announce that many Doane Stuart students took home prizes for the work they submitted. Doane Stuart swept 1st, 2nd and 3rd Places in the 3rd-5th Grade category. The students who earned awards were: Katrina Narde ‘26 (1st place); Marcelo Acosta-Boudreau ‘26 (2nd Place); and Hannah Strevell ‘26 (3rd Place). DS students also took home 2nd and 3rd Places in the 1st-2nd Grade category: Avery Kennedy ‘27 won 2nd Place, and Keane O’Leary ‘27 won 3rd Place.
Congratulations to our amazing Lower School students!
A special thank you to Upper School students Sophie Lacijan ‘18, Alexis Vautrin ‘18, Leilah Mariposa ‘19, Liz Cole ‘19, and Imani Elad ‘19 who joined members of the science faculty at the Saturday event at the NYS Museum. They helped run experiments for over 300 students and parents who visited. Each student who attended received his/her own safety goggles, and received a stamp in their Chemistry passport when they visited the DS table to extract their DNA, play with the Makey Makey or create tie-dye patterns in milk.
Thank you to the following faculty who helped make this event a huge success: Mrs. Cassant (Kindergarten; Dir. of Lower School) Mrs. Knaggs (STEAM Room Coordinator), Dr. Wells (Upper School Biology), Mr. Pickett (US Chemistry), Mr. Schindler (US Physics) and Mr. Bowman (Dir. of Admission).
Sponsored by the American Chemical Society, National Chemistry Week (NCW) is a yearly celebration of all things Chemistry. From their website: “NCW encourages chemists and chemistry enthusiasts to build awareness of chemistry at the local level. Local Sections, businesses, schools, and individuals are invited to organize or participate in events in their communities with a common goal: to promote the value of chemistry in everyday life.”
