Third Grade Visits New York State Museum

At Doane Stuart, students are encouraged to think and explore inside and outside of the classroom.  So much of what we do involves getting students to experience what they are learning.  The Middle School visited The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island during their Integrated Project on Immigration.  Upper Schoolers attended a lecture with a world-renowned expert on neuroscience at UAlbany and studied modern art at Mass Moca.

We live in an area surrounded by history, which enhances our students’ learning, as told by Third Grade Teacher Allison Kaplan:

Last week, Third Grade enjoyed a trip to the New York State Museum to further their studies on Native Americans.  We had a guided workshop entitled “People of the Longhouse.”  The students took a journey back in time to help understand who the first inhabitants of New York State were.  Through a variety of hands-on activities, the students explored tools used by the Iroquois people, how they used resources to make their own food, and even read a story written in Native American symbols.  We had the chance to go inside a full-size reconstruction of a Mohawk Longhouse and thought about what life back then must have been like.  Third Grade had a fun learning experience!
