“The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win.”
– Roger Bannister, first man to break the 4 minute mile
Congratulations to Shea Weilbaker ‘19 of Saratoga Springs, who will compete against some of the best runners in the country in the freshman mile at the New Balance Nationals Indoor Track meet this Sunday at the Armory in Manhattan. Though just a freshman, Shea is already making his mark on the mile distance and taking aim at the Doane Stuart record books. He has completed numerous sub 4:50 miles this year, including running a blistering 4:40, which was the qualifying mark for Nationals.
Back in December 2015, Shea and Jacob Brass ’18, of Delmar, competed amongst some of the best small school freshman and sophomore runners in the state. Out of seventy competitors for the freshman and sophomore mile, Shea finished in second place with a time of 4:46.32. Jacob completed his mile in 4:52.33, good enough for seventh place. Only one other school had more than two students finish in the top 20 and we are incredibly proud of this demonstration of our students’ athletic prowess.
Both Shea and Jacob also helped lead our indoor track team to its first Independent League Championship, beating out larger schools such as Green Tech, Chatham, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons and Maple Hill. This win was a true team effort, with every single member of the team scoring points to go towards the very close win. Congratulations to all.
Join us in wishing Shea the very best as he races off to Manhattan to compete this Sunday! Good luck and godspeed!
